Water, Food and Ecosystems

“Providing food security for all while conserving ecosystems and their services requires a grand food system transformation…”

Agriculture is the engine of food security, the largest global user of water and, in developing countries, an important source of employment. As competition for water intensifies, food systems must become more sustainable and resilient.

IWMI will provide evidence and data analytics needed by governments, financing institutions, farmers and other partners making choices about agricultural water management technologies. We also focus on the development of inclusive business models for smallholder irrigation and advise reforms in large-scale, public-sector irrigation. Research in this program will integrate ecosystem values, services and sustainability into water resource allocation and management practices.
