Before IWMI, Amarasinghe was a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science and Statistics at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka (1991-1992). Prior to that, he was a teaching/research assistant at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA (1984-1986) and at the Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois, USA (1986-1991). He also served as an assistant lecturer at the University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka (1983-1984) and the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka (1982-1983).
