Climate change is causing the Himalayan Glaciers to melt faster than previous decades. The New York Times reported that ice and snow from the Hindu Kush and Himalayan Mountain range melted 65% faster between 2010-2019 than previous decades.

IWMI Researcher Santosh Nepal was quoted in the article, saying that by 2050, the resulting meltwater “will be too much in some places and there will be too little in some places.” He projects that local communities will rely more on meltwater than rainwater as rainfall will become more unpredictable due to climate change. But this meltwater will be depleted in a maximum of 30 years.
